Loyd Schwartz

The Worcester State Foundation cordially invites you to an evening with Lloyd Schwartz, the Pulitzer Prize winning art critic, poet, and scholar, on Tuesday, April 7, at the Worcester Art Museum. Professor Schwartz will give a short talk about the arts in public education, reflecting on his own journey as the son of immigrants to an endowed chair in literature at he University of Massachusetts Boston and nationally distinguished career in the arts.

Known to thousands of NPR listeners by his distinctive voice, Schwartz is the contributing art critic on WBUR's ARTery and the classical music critic for National Public Radio's Fresh Air with Terry Gross. For decades, he has offered listeners his take on celebrated art exhibits, dance performances, books, and operas, giving the public ways of approaching and appreciating the many gifts of arts and culture.

Winner of awards from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, Schwartz lives in Somerville, where he is poet laureate. In December, he retired from his post as Frederick S. Troy Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts in Boston where, for years, he directed the graduate program in creative writing.

Schwartz is visiting Worcester State University for three days this spring, offering students a master class in art viewing and reviewing; a poetry reading and discussion; and a keynote lecture, "Confessions of a First-Generation College Grad." about his own education--in and through--the arts. He will offer his thoughts on this topic in a short address to alumni on Tuesday, April 7, celebrating Worcester State University's commitment to offering all our students enriching exposure to a wide variety of arts and cultures, which enable us to more fully appreciate each other and ourselves.
