The inaugural George H. Albro ’65 Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 23 at Blackstone National Golf Club, Sutton. A coach, mentor, and beloved friend to many at Worcester State University, Albro ’65, M.S. ’68, (Aug. 1, 1965 – Nov. 4, 2021) was a dedicated alumnus and university leader.
As part of Homecoming Weekend festivities, the tournament, launched just before the pandemic hit, has been renamed to honor George’s memory and to support athletics at Worcester State, which he believed was an important part of the student experience. On-site registration begins at 8 a.m., or you can register now by clicking here. There will be a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and a BBQ awards luncheon will follow the tournament.
“This tournament is the perfect way to honor George,” said Jodi Briggs-Pickett, executive director of development in WSU’s University Advancement Division. “He was dedicated to the success of our student athletes and enjoyed WSU events that brought alumni and friends together. This tournament is the perfect opportunity to do both, all while playing golf, which he so enjoyed. We look forward to continuing his legacy every year with this tournament.”
“After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the tournament will be a terrific opportunity to reengage with our Worcester State alumni and sponsors,” Mike Mudd, WSU’s athletic director, said. “All net proceeds raised will be utilized to create a better student-athlete experience for our teams. In addition, we expect to regain the momentum we created with the inaugural tournament which was hosted pre-pandemic so that additional funding can continue to be generated for our student-athletes.”
A talented athlete and a beloved coach, George was a play-making point guard who completed a record number of assists at Worcester State, where he led the ’61-62 team to a state championship. He coached Boys Basketball and Baseball at Leicester High over a span of 17 years and later served as Assistant and then Head Basketball Coach at Worcester State, where he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998. An avid golfer, he played in the Senior League at Bedrock CC in Rutland.
Dedicated to a life of service and philanthropy, George and his wife Lillian were steadfast supporters of their alma mater through many decades of the University’s growth.
